Abstract
An important aspect of Cypriots’ response to the colonial condition was a negotiation (and an emphasis upon) “national” identity, by the members of both main groups of Cypriots: former Christian and Muslim Cypriots were re-defined, within British colonial rule, as Greeks and Turkish Cypriots, respectively.
I will be looking at episodes of Greek Cypriot artists negotiating – responding to – this state of collective “identity”, in the colonial years, in the first decade of independence, and at the end of the 20th century.
