Abstract: EcoLanes is an FP6 STREP and aims to integrate simplicity and innovation to ensure the timely and cost-effective implementation of its findings into the construction and maintenance of surface transport. In order to assess the ‘EcoLanes approach’of steel fiber reinforcement in pavement construction, three alternative pavement constructions were evaluated: the asphalt (flexible) pavement construction, the wet (rigid) pavement construction and dry (rigid) pavement construction with steel fiber reinforcement (from recycled tyres). Energy consumed for the whole life cycle for each pavement, construction and maintenance cost and environmental emissions have been considered. It has been found that the dry pavement construction process with SFR-RCC incorporating steel fibers from recycled tyres is more cost effective and environmentally friendly with low emmisions.
