Abstract
Both the increase on the standards of living and population growth, have led to a significant increase of the production of urban, industrial and agricultural waste, resulting into a continuously growing disposal problem. Among the numerous types of waste generated, viscous, fat, oils and grease are three of the most difficult categories of waste to process and dissolve. This thesis aim is to study biogas production through the process of anaerobic digestion of fats, oils and grease using primary and secondary digested sludge.
For achieving this goal, lab experiments were performed in which various fats, oils and grease pre-treatment methods were applied. The methods used in the experiments were, a thermal method (at 70oC and 100oC), a chemical method (3M NaOH, pH 9 and 12), a combination of thermal and chemical method and finally an anaerobic pre-treatment method. Biogas production experiments were found to enhance the total production of the gas, with the exception of the methods in which pH value was 12 where a decrease on the production rate occurred.
