Abstract
Background: Guided imagery is a complementary therapy which uses the body and mind to form mental images in the mind which bring about changes in physical, emotional and mental state of patients with cancer.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use and effectiveness of guided imagery to improve the quality of life and reduce pain.
Material and Methods: The method used was the search of the relevant Greek and English literature electronic databases (Pubmed, Medline, Science Direct, CINAHL) with keywords guided imagery, cancer, pain, quality of life, nurs*.
Results: In the search of the literature has found that the guided imagery is an intervention whose use in clinical practice is important because it provides relief in many cancer patients in many of the symptoms such as pain reduction and improved quality of life. Many patients and even health professionals are opposed to its use. Many studies have shown that the use of guided imagery is growing and the practical application of constantly improved.
Conclusions: The guided imagery can improve the quality of life and reduce pain in some patients with cancer.
