| dc.description | This master's thesis investigates the philosophical phenomenon of "imaginative resistance," referring to individuals' inability or unwillingness to emotionally and morally engage with fictional scenarios that starkly contradict their core values. The thesis examines the main philosophical approaches addressing this phenomenon, beginning with David Hume, who initially identified the intricate relationship between moral repulsion and aesthetic enjoyment. Kendall Walton formulated the issue as a paradoxical occurrence that sparked extensive debate and diverse interpretations. Tamar Szabo Gendler advances a version of wontian theory, positing that resistance arises from reluctance to adopt evaluative beliefs contrary to one's ethical principles. Conversely, cantian theories, as presented by Kendal Walton and Brian Weatherson, attribute resistance to the cognitive incapacity to accept morally divergent situations as true within fictional contexts. Additionally, eliminative theories, advanced by Cain Todd, dismiss imaginative resistance as a pseudo-problem. Finally, the thesis explores contemporary psychological and emotional perspectives by Elizabeth Camp and Thomas Szanto, emphasizing the empathetic and psychological dimensions of imaginative engagement. The thesis concludes by highlighting the significance of psychological and emotional analyses as expansions of philosophical views, stressing that imaginative resistance concerns not merely inability but primarily the individual's unwillingness to accept morally deviant fictions. | en_US |
| dc.description.abstract | Η παρούσα μεταπτυχιακή διατριβή διερευνά το φιλοσοφικό φαινόμενο της «φαντασιακής αντίστασης», δηλαδή την αδυναμία ή την απροθυμία των ανθρώπων να εμπλακούν συναισθηματικά και ηθικά με μυθοπλαστικά σενάρια που αποκλίνουν έντονα από τις θεμελιώδεις αξίες τους. Η εργασία εστιάζει στην ανάλυση των κύριων φιλοσοφικών προσεγγίσεων που εξηγούν το φαινόμενο, ξεκινώντας από τον David Hume, ο οποίος πρώτος εντόπισε τη σχέση μεταξύ ηθικής αποστροφής και αισθητικής απόλαυσης. Ο Kendall Walton διατύπωσε το ζήτημα ως ένα παράδοξο φαινόμενο που έχει προκαλέσει ποικίλες ερμηνείες και αντιπαραθέσεις.
