Η διατριβή περιλαμβάνει πτυχές της ιστορίας του Αφηρημένου Εξπρεσιονισμού και των καλλιτεχνικών δρωμένων της Αμερικής στα μέσα του 20ού αιώνα. Αρχικά γίνεται αναφορά στο Federal Art Project, στη συμμετοχή του Pollock σε αυτό και στη διαμόρφωση της εικόνας του ως μοναχικού καλλιτέχνη. Στη συνέχεια δίνεται μια γενική εικόνα όσον αφορά τον Αφηρημένο Εξπρεσιονισμό με έμφαση στις τοποθετήσεις των Harold Rosenberg και Clement Greenberg. Ειδικό θέμα ανάλυσης αποτελούν οι φορμαλιστικές αντιλήψεις του Clement Greenberg και η αντιμετώπιση του Αφηρημένου Εξπρεσιονισμού ως του κατεξοχήν αντιπροσωπευτικού αμερικανικού καλλιτεχνικού ύφους που εκφράζει την αυτονομία της υποκειμενικότητας. Ακολούθως παρουσιάζεται ένα χρονολόγιο με έμφαση στην πορεία του Pollock μετά τη γνωριμία του με τη Lee Krasner ως σύζυγο και μέντορά του, και δίνεται ιδιαίτερη σημασία στις συνεργασίες του με την Peggy Guggenheim και την Betty Parsons. Επιπλέον, αναλύεται η τέχνη του Pollock όσον αφορά τους «all over» πίνακες και τον «αυτοματισμό» της ζωγραφικής του μέσα από τη ψυχαναλυτική θεωρία. Κύριο ζήτημα αποτελεί η προβολή του Pollock από τα μέσα μαζικής ενημέρωσης, με ιδιαίτερη αναφορά στη φωτογράφιση και στην κινηματογράφησή του από τον Hans Namuth. Κατόπιν εξετάζεται το θέμα της προπαγανδιστικής προβολής του Αφηρημένου Εξπρεσιονισμού κατά την περίοδο του Ψυχρού Πολέμου και οι σχέσεις του ΜοΜΑ με κυβερνητικούς φορείς. Επιπλέον, γίνεται αναφορά στην καλλιτεχνική πορεία της Lee Krasner και επισημαίνεται ο ρόλος της στη διαχείριση της κληρονομιάς του Pollock. Τέλος, με σημείο αναφοράς την εικόνα του Pollock, παρουσιάζεται συνοπτικά η πρόσληψη του Αφηρημένου Εξπρεσιονισμού μέχρι σήμερα. | Description: | This dissertation provides information and facts about the life and work of Jackson Pollock, with the aim of approaching his iconic status. Through this biographical range, important points concurrently emerge relating to the history of Abstract Expressionism, and the artistic events of the USA in the middle of the 20th century. Initially, reference is made to the Federal Art Project, Pollock's participation in it, and to the shaping of his image as a solitary artist. Following on, an overview of ‘Abstract Expressionism’ is provided with an emphasis on the views of Rosenberg and Greenberg, as well as its explanation as an artistic phenomenon. We also explore the autonomous subjectivity of American artistic expression and Greenberg's formalistic conceptions. A chronology, focusing primarily on Pollock's life after his acquaintance with Lee Krasner, as his wife and mentor, is presented; with special emphasis placed on his work, in particular, his collaborations with Peggy Guggenheim and Betty Parsons. Pollock's art is then analyzed in terms of “all over” paintings and the automation of his art through psychoanalytic theory. Significant prominence is given to Pollock’s projection in the media, depicted primarily through the photography of Hans Namuth. The issue of Abstract Expressionism being used for propaganda purposes by government bodies is also examined. A profile of the woman behind Pollock, Lee Krasner, her pivotal role in the management of Pollock’s legacy, and her own artistic contributions as an accomplished artist is put forward.
