dc.descriptionThis dissertation analyses sublime in art and it is based on the works of William Turner and his quest for the sublime. The analysis begins from the great philosophers, starting with Longinus, goes to Edmund Burke till it reaches more modern philosophers like Immanuel Kant. Early works of Turner are being analysed till his death, as well as his sublime paintings that have been recognised by the public. Concluding, the dissertation takes a look at sublime today, that has been influenced greatly by technology and world globalisation and considers the similarities between the sublime in the 19th and the 20th centuries.en_US
dc.description.abstractΗ παρούσα διατριβή αναλύει το υψηλό στη τέχνη και ειδικότερα καταπιάνεται με το έργο του ζωγράφου Ουίλιαμ Τέρνερ, στο ταξίδι του για την αναζήτηση του υψηλού. Η ανάλυση του υψηλού αρχίζει από τους μεγάλους φιλόσοφους και συγκεκριμένα από τον Λογγίνο μέχρι τον Έντμουντ Μπέρκ και προχωρά στους πιο σύγχρονους φιλοσόφους μέχρι τον Ιμμάνουελ Καντ. Αναλύονται έργα από την πρώιμη ζωή του Τέρνερ, καθώς και οι υψηλοί του πίνακες που έχουν αναγνωριστεί ευρέως από το κοινό. Τελειώνοντας, η διατριβή καταλήγει στη θέση του υψηλού σήμερα, η οποία έχει επηρεαστεί πολύ από την τεχνολογία και την παγκοσμιοποίηση του κόσμου και παραθέτει τις ομοιότητες που συνδέουν το υψηλό κατά τον 19ο αιώνα με το υψηλό κατά τον 20ο αιώνα.en_US
