Project: 2019 European Capital of Culture Program
Description: Matera European Photography (ME.PH) and Matera Diffusa, supported by Canon Europe, have developed this Residency to celebrate Matera, the city that together with Plovdiv (BG), host the 2019 European Capital of Culture Program https://www.matera-basilicata2019.it/en/ . I have spent seven days in Matera, where collaborated to the realization of a photographical project, led to an important exhibition: “Visions from Europe”. Active since 2015, ME.PH is a cultural association established with the mission of enhancing the research and the photographic production in the Basilicata Region.
Promoting synergies and partnerships, ME.PH and Matera Diffusa aims to support the evolution of the photographic heritage of Matera and its territory, the vibrant landscape, the anthropological and historical features of Basilicata through the eyes of Photographers and Artists. MEPH is a not-for-profit organization, entirely dedicated to cultural activities, debuted in 2015- 16 with a series of artistic residencies entrusted authors, significant Italian and European talents engaged in Photographic research. In 2017, in preparation of the European Capital of Culture initiative, within the framework of the activities developed by the Italian Ministry of Culture, supported by the government of the Region Basilicata and the Municipality of Matera, ME.PH organised an international Forum of Studies on Contemporary Photography, hosting for a series of lectures a panel of 25 experts selected among authors, professors, curators, journalists and educators. President of the ME.PH Association is Roberto Linzalone, the Artistic Director is Cosmo Laera, from the Academy of Arts of Brera – Milan. Both deeply involved in Photography, they actively support Canon Europe in the development of the European Student’s initiative, the Residency and its accreditation in the official Matera 2019 – Capital of Culture Programme Through a series of projects and educational initiatives, MEPH intends to support the culture of photography, elevating to new standards the documentation of the territory. 28 eligible Students and their Teachers will come to Matera and collaborated for the production of “Visions from Europe”, exhibition. Because of the evident variety in the vision of the selected group of young Photographers and their Teachers, what has been captured in the frame became perennial memory. The initiative is designed to leverage the iconography of the city, beyond its current boundaries. Coherent to the European Capital of Culture agenda, collectively we intended to develop an inclusive and contemporary vision of Matera and Basilicata. The Fondazione Matera – Basilicata 2019, governing the official program of the Capital of Culture, has granted formal recognition and support to the project “Visions from Europe”, coherently the City offers access to an important venue to display our production.
The exhibition has been curated by Cosmo Laera, Artistic Director of ME.PH, also supported by Francis Kohn, Journalist and Mentor, on behalf of Canon Europe. I as a Mentor and Mentee student Athousa Papadopoulou were in Matera in the week of 04 May 2019 thru 11 May 2019 At the arrival we have been introduced to ME.PH and its delegates; a dedicated briefing session took place to offer adequate introduction to the City, its territory and the Residency project.
Primary goal of the Residency was to document a research in its broadest meaning, possibly with your Mentor/Mentee, developing your own original “vision”, your relationship with the environment, your narrative and your signature, documenting the encounter and the exploration of the territory. ME.PH and the City of Matera, during the Residency, has also organized lectures and meetings with the local audience, conversations between Photographers, Artists and other students. Those images from our portfolio that will became part of the exhibition “Visions from Europe” and then donated to the Archive of the City of Matera, as testimony of the initiative, creating a Photographic legacy for future generations.
