Lakes, as providers of numerous ecosystem services, face multiple stressors that threaten their functioning. Harmful cyanobacterial blooms are a persistent problem resulting from nutrient pollution and climate-change induced stressors, like poor transparency, increased water temperature and enhanced stratification. Consistency in data collection and analysis methods is necessary to achieve fully comparable datasets and for statistical validity, avoiding issues linked to disparate data sources. The European Multi Lake Survey (EMLS) in summer 2015 was an initiative among scientists from 27 countries to collect and analyse lake physical, chemical and biological variables in a fully standardized manner. This database includes in-situ lake variables along with nutrient, pigment and cyanotoxin data of 369 lakes in Europe, which were centrally analysed in dedicated laboratories. Publishing the EMLS methods and dataset might inspire similar initiatives to study across large geographic areas that will contribute to better understanding lake responses in a changing environment. | ISSN: | 20524463 | DOI: | 10.1038/sdata.2018.226 | Rights: | © The Author(s) | Type: | Article | Affiliation : | University of Geneva Leiden University University of Amsterdam Cyprus University of Technology Universidade Federal da Paraíba University of Osijek Teaching Institute of Public Health of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County University of Zagreb Masaryk University Morava Board Authority The Czech Academy of Sciences University of Copenhagen Estonian University of Life Sciences University of Tartu Åbo Akademi University University of Jyväskylä University of Helsinki Unit Drinking Water Resources and Water Treatment University of Konstanz Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries Potsdam University Athens Water Supply and Sewerage Company (EYDAP SA) National Center for Scientific Research Demokritos Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Dundalk Institute of Technology Fondazione Edmund Mach Nature Research Centre Norwegian Institute for Water Research University of Bialystok University of Bielsko-Biala The State University of Applied Sciences University of Gdansk University of Jaen Polish Academy of Sciences University of Life Sciences in Lublin Inland Fisheries Institute University of Warmia and Mazury University of Warmia and Mazury Adam Mickiewicz University Poznan University of Technology University of Warsaw Warsaw University of Life Sciences National Research Institute Instituto Politécnico de Bragança University of Lisbon Institute of Earth Sciences Jaume Almera Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research University of Porto University of the Azores SS Cyril and Methodius University Public Health Authority of the Slovak Republic National Institute of Biology University of A Coruña Slovenian Environmental Agency University of Barcelona AECOM University of Cádiz Catalan Institute for Water Research University of Granada University of Granada 3edata University of Malaga Universidade da Coruña University of Valencia Lund University University of Cankiri Karatekin Uppsala University Netherlands Institute of Ecology Wageningen University & Research Wageningen University Society for the Protection of Prespa Radboud University Nijmegen Université Clermont Auverge Virginia Tech University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill National Institute of Environmental Health Gaziosmanpasa University Ankara University Middle East Technical University Balikesir University Bolu Abant Izzet Baysal University Mediterranean Fisheries Research Production and Training Institute Bursa Technical University Hitit University Ataturk University Giresun University Fisheries Research Institute Istanbul University Mersin University Sakarya University University of Stirling Robert Gordon University University of Innsbruck Independent graphic designer and illustration Agri-Food & Biosciences Institute |
