Abstract
This thesis explores whether integrating traditional animation elements into 3D animation pipelines can enhance emotional expressiveness, addressing concerns that CGI often prioritises technical efficiency over nuanced character portrayal. The research focuses on the question: (RQ1) how they can visualise a character’s thoughts about others. To investigate this, a mixed-media animated short film is created using a standard 3D workflow, followed by the addition of hand-drawn overlays applied in traditional animation software. The final film is evaluated through interviews with the field experts to assess the effectiveness and practical potential of the approach. The findings aim to determine the viability of this hybrid technique and provide a foundation for further exploration into improving expressiveness in modern 3D animation.
