Biography
Dr Elias Gravanis is special teaching personnel at the Civil Engineering and Geomatics Department of Cyprus University of Technology. He completed his undergraduate studies in Physics in the University of Athens, Greece in 1997 and his post-graduate studies in the Columbia University in 2000 under a Columbia University Fellowship. He received his Ph.D. from the University of London (King's College London) in the field of Mathematical Physics in 2006. Since 2010 he works in the Cyprus University of Technology (Dept. of Civil Engineering and Geomatics), initially as a research assistant in the AIOLOS project on modeling the wind-power in Cyprus, as well as on various projects in fluid mechanics, theory and modelling of turbulence and groundwater hydrology. During 2013-2014 he worked on the NIREAS project at the International Water Research Center (IWRC) NIREAS on erosion problems in dams. He also works on research projects in the context of geomechanics, geotechnical applications and fluid transport in porous media, including geological CO2 sequestration, enhanced oil recovery, erosion processes in oil-wellbores, as well as on stochastic stability analysis of earth and rock structures. More recently, he has also been interested in inverse methods in hydrogeological problems, utilizing stochastic inversion techniques, in the context of the MEDSAL project (Salinization of critical groundwater reserves in coastal Mediterranean areas: Identification, risk assessment and sustainable management with the use of integrated modelling and smart ICT tools), which aims to secure the availability and quality of groundwater reserves in Mediterranean coastal areas by sustainable management of coastal aquifers. Additionally, he teaches Mathematics, Physics, Hydraulics, Hydrology and Water Resources Management at the Department of Civil Engineering and Geomatics.
