Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate with the use of the SBEMcy software various measures to reduce energy consumption of a typical house in Cyprus and analyze the life cycle cost of the various measures.Initially the energy consumption of the typical house was studied and then each construction and various combinations of these constructions was examined to show the percentage of energy saving offered to the typical house.Subsequently the best constructions were selected based on the percentage of saved energy and the extra construction cost. The selected constructions were then analysed techno-economically so as to find the payback time.According to the results it was found that the roof is the first building element for the targeted insulation of the house. The constructions which have as insulation the extruded polystyrene show a greater saving in energy from the construction using expanded polystyrene due to the lower thermal conductivity. For the thermal insulation of walls it was observed that all types investigated can be used, but the best saving is offered by the double wall with air gap and extruded polystyrene with 5 cm thickness. In the case of roofs, the best case is the horizontal slab as opposed to the inclined roof which is worse with both types of insulation.Although the horizontal slab with inclined roof offers the same saving in energy as the horizontal slab it is not preferred because the payback time is bigger and the initial expenditure is rather big.According to the payback time it is best to insulate all the studied building compartment (walls, structure and roofs) as the offered saving in energy is almost 50% of the non - insulated typical house and the payback years are less compared to the cases of one or two insulated building elements.
