dc.descriptionOnobrychis viciifolia, commonly known as sainfoin, is gaining attention in the field of animal nutrition due to its unique nutritional and health-promoting properties. This perennial legume is rich in protein, fiber, and essential minerals, making it a highly nutritious feed option for various livestock species, including ruminants and monogastrics. Sainfoin’s high tannin content distinguishes it from other forage legumes, contributing to improved protein utilization and offering natural anthelmintic benefits by reducing gastrointestinal parasite burdens. Studies have demonstrated that diets incorporating sainfoin can enhance animal productivity, and overall health status. Furthermore, sainfoin cultivation supports sustainable agricultural practices through its ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen, improve soil structure, and resist drought conditions. This thesis reviews current research findings on the nutritional benefits of Onobrychis viciifolia, its impact on livestock health and productivity, and its role in promoting sustainable animal farming practices. The integration of sainfoin into animal diets presents a promising avenue for enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of animal husbandry.en_US
dc.description.abstractο Onobrychis viciifolia, γνωστό ως sainfoin, αποτελεί πολύτιμο κτηνοτροφικό ψυχανθές στη διατροφή των ζώων λόγω του εξαιρετικού διατροφικού του προφίλ και των ευεργετικών του ιδιοτήτων για την υγεία. Το πολυετές αυτό ψυχανθές χαρακτηρίζεται από την υψηλή περιεκτικότητά του σε πρωτεΐνες και φυτικές ίνες, καθώς και σε απαραίτητα μέταλλα, καθιστώντας το άριστη τροφή για μυρηκαστικά αλλά και μονογαστρικά ζώα. Ένα ιδιαίτερο χαρακτηριστικό του είναι η υψηλή περιεκτικότητά του σε τανίνες, οι οποίες όχι μόνο βελτιώνουν την αξιοποίηση των πρωτεϊνών αλλά και παρέχουν φυσικές ανθελμινθικές ιδιότητες, μειώνοντας σημαντικά τα παράσιτα του γαστρεντερικού σωλήνα. Ερευνητικές μελέτες αποδεικνύουν ότι η ενσωμάτωσή του στη διατροφή των ζώων μπορεί να βελτιώσει την παραγωγή προϊόντων και τη συνολική υγεία των ζώων. Επιπλέον, μέσω της αζωτοδέσμευσης, της βελτίωσης του εδάφους και της ανθεκτικότητας στην ξηρασία, καθιστά δυνατή μια πιο βιώσιμη γεωργία. Η παρούσα διπλωματική εργασία εξετάζει τις τρέχουσες έρευνες σχετικά με τα διατροφικά οφέλη τoυ Onobrychis viciifolia, τις επιδράσεις της στην παραγωγικότητα και την υγεία των ζώων, καθώς και τη συμβολή του στις βιώσιμες πρακτικές κτηνοτροφίας. Τα αποτελέσματα υποδηλώνουν ότι το συγκεκριμένο φυτό αποτελεί μια πολλά υποσχόμενη επιλογή για την αύξηση της αποδοτικότητας και της βιωσιμότητας της κτηνοτροφίας.en_US
