| dc.description | The present dissertation entitled "The effects of Covid-19 on the level of trust in Journalism: Qualitative Analysis in Cyprus" was conducted by Marilena Hadjimilti, student of the Communication and Internet Studies Department of Cyprus University of Technology under the supervision of Dr. Paschalia Spyridou and completed on May 30, 2021. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether and why the journalistic coverage of the coronavirus reinforced the lack of trust in journalism in Cyprus. The research is based on the concept of trust and credbility in the media. One of the major challenges facing journalism in recent years is the lack of public confidence in it (Fink, 2019 p.40). Especially in times of crisis, such as the covid-19 pandemic, the role played by the media is very important, not only as informational, but also as psychological support for the public. Two focus groups were used for data collection. The research sample was selected by the method of convinience and a total of 11 Cypriot citizens between the age of 18-55 took part on the survey. Participants were asked to answer questions about their trust in the media and whether the coverage of the coronavirus by the Cypriot media affected their level of trust. The discussion in the focus groups lasted about an hour and a half. After data collection, the discussions were transcribed and coded into categories and topics to answer the research question. The results showed that trust in the media was negatively affected during the pandemic, and the media had a significant share of responsibility. Specifically, the results showed that citizens attribute to journalism low quality, lack of information and commitment to financial interests that tend to play a key role in people's distrust of the media in Cyprus. Almost all participants also referred to the creation of panic from news media. Based on the results, the way in which the Cypriot media framed the coronavirus from the beginning of the pandemic until today was one of the main reasons that people distrust media. | en_US |
| dc.description.abstract | Η παρούσα πτυχιακή εργασία με τίτλο «Οι επιπτώσεις του Covid-19 στο επίπεδο εμπιστοσύνης στη Δημοσιογραφία: Ποιοτική Ανάλυση στην Κύπρο» εκπονήθηκε από τη Μαριλένα Χατζημιλτή φοιτήτρια του Τμήματος ΕΣΔ του ΤΕΠΑΚ υπό την επίβλεψη της Δρ. Πασχαλίας Σπυρίδου και ολοκληρώθηκε στις 30 Μαίου 2021. Σκοπός της εργασίας είναι να ερευνηθεί εάν και γιατί η δημοσιογραφική κάλυψη του κορονοϊού ενίσχυσε την έλλειψη εμπιστοσύνης στη δημοσιογραφία στην Κύπρο. Η έρευνα στηρίζεται στην έννοια της εμπιστοσύνης προς τα μέσα ενημέρωσης, και την αξιοπιστία των μέσων. Μία από τις μεγάλες προκλήσεις που αντιμετωπίζει τα τελευταία χρόνια η δημοσιογραφία είναι η έλλειψη εμπιστοσύνης του κοινού σε αυτήν (Fink, 2019 σελ.40). Ιδιαίτερα σε περιόδους κρίσης, όπως είναι και η πανδημία του κορονοϊού, ο ρόλος που κατέχουν τα μέσα ενημέρωσης είναι πολύ σημαντικός, όχι μόνο για την πληροφόρηση αλλά και για την ψυχολογική υποστήριξη του κοινού. Για τη συλλογή δεδομένων δημιουργήθηκαν δύο ομάδες εστίασης. Το δείγμα της έρευνας επιλέχθηκε με τη μέθοδο της ευκολίας και έλαβαν μέρος συνολικά 11 Κύπριοι πολίτες ηλικίας 18-55 χρονών. Οι συμμετέχοντες κλήθηκαν να απαντήσουν ερωτήσεις σχετικά με την εμπιστοσύνη τους στα μέσα ενημέρωσης και αν η κάλυψη του κορονοϊού από τα Κυπριακά μέσα ενημέρωσης επηρέασε το επίπεδο εμπιστοσύνης τους. Η συζήτηση στις ομάδες εστίασης διήρκεσε περίπου μία με ενάμισυ ώρα. Μετά τη συλλογή των δεδομένων οι συζητήσεις απομαγνητοφωνήθηκαν και κωδικοποιήθηκαν σε κατηγορίες και θέματα για να απαντηθεί το ερευνητικό ερώτημα. Τα αποτελέσματα δείχνουν ότι η εμπιστοσύνη προς τα μέσα ενημέρωσης επηρεάστηκε αρνητικά κατά τη διάρκεια της πανδημίας, και τα ίδια τα μέσα έχουν σημαντικό μερίδιο ευθύνης. Συγκεκριμένα, τα αποτελέσματα έδειξαν ότι οι πολίτες καταλογίζουν στη δημοσιογραφία χαμηλή ποιότητα, ελλιπή πληροφόρηση και προσήλωση σε οικονομικά συμφέροντα που τείνουν να έχουν καθοριστικό ρόλο για τη δυσπιστία των ατόμων προς τα μέσα ενημέρωσης στην Κύπρο. Σχεδόν όλοι οι συμμετέχοντες αναφέρθηκαν επίσης στη δημιουργία πανικού λόγω του τρόπου με τον οποίο τα κυπριακά μέσα ενημέρωσης πλαισίωσαν τον κορονοϊό από την αρχή της πανδημίας μέχρι σήμερα. | en_US |
