Kyriakidis, Phaedon
Κυριακίδης, Φαίδων
Dr. Phaedon Kyriakidis is a Professor (since September 2015) at the Department of Civil Engineering and Geomatics of the Cyprus University of Technology, as well as Adjunct Professor (since July 2015) at the Department of Geography of the University California Santa Barbara (UCSB) in the USA. Prior to these appointments, Dr. Kyriakidis was on the Faculty of the Department of Geography at UCSB -- Assistant Professor (2001-2005), Association Professor (2005-2012) and Full Professor (2012-2015) – as well as Professor of Spatial Analysis (since 2009) at the Department of Geography of the University of the Aegean in Greece. He obtained his PhD (1999) from the Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences of Stanford University USA, and was a Post-Doctoral Fellow (1999-2000) at the Earth Sciences Division of Berkeley National Laboratory USA, where he also held a Faculty Staff appointment (2001-2013). Dr. Kyriakidis’s research interests include geostatistics, geocomputation, geographic information systems and science, as well as their applications to earth and environmental sciences and geomatics. He has co-authored more than 50 papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals, as well as numerous contributions in conference proceedings and edited volumes. He has also co-authored (with Prof. Andre Journel) the book entitled “Evaluation of Mineral Reserves: A Simulation Approach”, published in 2004 by Oxford University Press in its Applied Geostatistics Series. Dr. Kyriakidis has received a best paper award for his 2013 publication in the journal Mathematical Geosciences -- Kyriakidis, P.C., and Gaganis, P. (2013): Efficient simulation of (log)normal random fields for hydrogeological applications, Mathematical Geosciences, 45(6): 531-556 -- as well as a best paper award for his 2010 conference contribution -- Kyriakidis, P.C., and Nagle, N.N. (2010): Geostatistical regression for areal data, 9th International Symposium on Spatial Accuracy Assessment in Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences, July 2010, Leicester, UK. He has also been an invited keynote speaker at the 7th International Conference on Geostatistics for Environmental Applications, Southampton, UK (2008), and the 7th International Symposium on Spatial Accuracy Assessment in Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences, Lisbon, Portugal (2006). His research has been funded mostly by the US National Science Foundation, NASA, NOAA, as well as (more recently) by the Greek Secretariat for Research and Technology. Dr. Kyriakidis has served on the Scientific Committees of numerous international conferences and has reviewed manuscripts and proposals for a wide spectrum of peer-reviewed scientific journals and international funding agencies, respectively. He currently serves as an Associate Editor (since 2014) for the journal Geographical Analysis, as a Member on the Editorial Boards of the International Journal of Geographical Information Science (since 2007) and Spatial Statistics (since 2012), as well as a Board Member (since 2014) of HellasGIS, the Hellenic Geographic Information Systems Society. He is also a co-editor (with Prof. Stefanakis and Prof. Liu) for the ISPRS International Journal of Geo-Information on a 2015 special issue “Advances in Spatio-Temporal Data Analysis and Mining”.
