Description

Abstract
The I.S.L.E Erasmus Academic network project: “Innovation in the teaching of Sustainable Development in Life sciences in Europe”, involved 39 partners from 30 LLP countries. These included Higher Education Institutions (the vast majority having faculties where life sciences are taught) Research institutes and enterprises, interested in introducing the concept of Sustainable Development in their curricula and/or institutions having had experience in this area and who are willing to transmit their know-how on this subject. Over the final eighteen months, the network has organised three (3) additional Consortium meetings in the UK, Slovenia and Bulgaria: The 5th I.S.L.E. project meeting on the theme of "Exploitation" was held at Harper Adams University College (Newport - Shropshire, UK) from the 23rd until the 27th of April 2012. An Exploitation Seminar took place in order to offer the tools and the products implemented so far to other HEI’s outside of the consortium. The 6th I.S.L.E. project meeting on the theme of “Innovation practices” took place at the University of Maribor in Slovenia from 10th to 14th March 2013. It enabled the consortium members to discuss on the progress and outcomes of the project so far, based on the previous Professionalization" and "Exploitation" meetings, which provided significant feedback to the partners. This meeting allowed the consortium partners to discuss Innovation Practices and the way that these may be implemented in the project’s context. The final meeting and Summer School was hosted by International University College in Balchik, Bulgaria from 11th to 15th June 2013. This 7th project meeting was the opportunity for the consortium members to present the final outcomes of the project, to congratulate each other for the enormous work carried out and to celebrate the friendships created over the three years. During the meeting, post project dissemination strategy for dissemination was presented in order to prepare for the future. The winners of the I.S.L.E student competion were also asked to join the meeting and present their winning video. The following deliverables were finalised during these meetings: - The compilation and publication of a “Good Practices Compendium” that may be transferred and duplicated to other Higher Education Institutions in and outside of Europe. - An I.S.L.E label for teaching programs dedicated or related to Sustainable Development. - An “ISLELearn” Moodle platform for distance learning opportunities - Guidelines for Professors on how to teach Sustainable Development. - The compilation and publication of an “Innovation Practices Compendium” that may be transferred and duplicated to other Higher Education Institutions in and outside of Europe. Communication continued to be carefully orchestrated within the “Dissemination” work package n° 8 which ensured that people continued to spread the word about progress and promote the work carried out. The project is now completed after three years, and the various steps undertaken have resulted in powerful tools that can be used by many institutions outside the consortium and their students or even by institutions or companies (including Lifelong learning): - State of the Art on the teaching of sustainable development in Europe; - A Good Practices compendium; - Professonalisation survey results and fair; - Creation of a diagnostic grid for other HEI's, non-consortium members (colleges, schools) to evaluate teaching programmes ; - Development and award of an I.S.L.E “label” for teaching programs dedicated or related to SD; - Presentation and exchange of curricula; - Guidelines for the teaching of sustainable development; - An Innovation practices compendium. The I.S.L.E project website which provides all information including the outcomes of the project can be consulted at: http://www.isle-project.eu The I.S.L.E website will remain available to all the different public in order to maintain interest and to continue to update data. As part of the Exploitation strategy, the members of the consortium resubmitted a follow-up project in April 2013, which unfortunately was not selected, but the Network has created an I.S.L.E Association and has been accepted to become a permanent Standing Committee of “ICA” – the Association of European Life Science universities.
