Abstract
The purpose of this research paper is to critically review the literature regarding the earth pressures. Depth of excavations and quality of soil are correlated with the weight of the buildings and or structure to be constructed and therefore correlated to the expense of the same. In the bibliography, many theoretical and experimental studies on the method of distribution and magnitude of earth pressures in the retaining walls are illustrated.
This paper presents various methodologies applied to calculate the pressures in a soil mass as well as soil factors taken into account in each case. The most common methods used were those of Rankine (1857) and Coulomb (1776). Subsequently, comparative tables are presented in accordance with the data reported in the previous chapter which have to do primarily with the methodology used and the factors of soil. Finally, it summarizes the main conclusions arising through this work.
