Abstract
The limited resources of geospatial data within Cyprus, lead to the need of creation of a spatial data infrastructure (SDI), not only for the purpose of promoting research procedures, but also to ease the work of engineers in Cyprus. As a result, the present thesis aims to the investigation and analysis of existing Server-based and Cloud-based GIS technologies, which are available for the creation of a SDI. In addition, a new GIS technology based on cloud is investigated to determine its ability to meet the needs of a SDI.
Firstly, different GIS technologies were detected and compared. Consequently, a further research of ESRI’s software, ArcGIS for Server and ArcGIS Online was carried out in the frame of the implementation of the SDI. Current web services were then sought for the area of Cyprus and abroad, in order to obtain information on data which are currently available and data which will be useful for the end user to obtain. The next step involved the creation of two geodatabases in order to serve raster and vector information, to import the available data, to create various maps layers and subsequently, to share them in ArcGIS Online cloud platform. Finally, the ready-to-use apps that ArcGIS Online offers, were used for the creation of the Open Data SDI for the area of Cyprus.
