Abstract
The purpose of this thesis was the study of the effect of adding fats, oils, and pretreated fats in anaerobic digesters as substrate with anaerobic sludge, which was originated from urban wastewater from Sewerage board of Limassol – Amathus with effective biogas production.
For this purpose, experiments were contacted in digesters, which they were operating with the same residence time (36 days). The ratio of the sludge / fats were 95/5, 90/10, 80/20 and 50/50 respectively. In addition, a control digester was created which it did not contain any fats and oils. The fats and oils were pretreated at various times.
The fats and oils were treated with ultrasonic method at 20 kHz at different times; they were placed in a Sonicator for 15, 30 and 60 minutes. The processing laboratory results led to the following conclusions: With the pretreatment of fats and oils for 30 minutes and proportion sludge / fats 50/50 and 80/20the anaerobic digesters present increased production of biogas from the digester control.
