Abstract
This Thesis entitled "Bioleaching copper from electronic waste" drawn up by Stavros Ioannou, the 4th year student of the Department of Environmental Science and Technology, of Cyprus University of Technology. Had a total duration of one year, was conducted under the supervision of a lecturer Dr. Vyrides Ioannis and completed in May 2015.
The rapidly growing flow of e-waste is a new environmental challenge in terms of management, recycling, reuse and recovery of precious metals such as copper. So far, energy intensive and non-environmental friendly techniques have been used for the recovery of precious metal from electronic waste. However, biotechnological methods that use microorganisms to extract metals from electronic waste have great potential as it is a low cost process and do not use hazardous and toxic chemicals.
