dc.description.abstractΗ Μεσογειακή Αναιμία είναι μία εκ γενετής ανωμαλία του αίματος που απαιτεί χρονικές μεταγγίσεις αίματος και θεραπείες αποσιδήρωσης για να αφαιρεθεί ο επιπλέον σίδηρος που παράγεται στο κορμί. Εάν αυτό δεν γίνει τότε καταστρέφονται ζωτικά όργανα αφού οι αυξημένες ποσότητες σιδήρου που συσσωρεύονται στο αίμα γίνονται τοξικές και μπορεί οδηγήσουν στον θάνατο Η μεσογειακή αναιμία είναι μία από τις σοβαρότερες κληρονομικές παθήσεις και αποτελεί συχνό φαινόμενο στην περιοχή της Μεσογείου, στη Μέση Ανατολή και τη Ν.Α Ασία.
