Abstract
This Master Thesis aims to study the environmental impacts that may arise from desalination plants in Vasiliko and Akrotiri. Originally held introductory report stating all the particulars regarding the Eastern Mediterranean, which include physicochemical measurements, ie nutrients (chlorophyll – a), dissolved oxygen, pH, salinity and temperature. Also a literature review is included, which includes journal articles that study all the above factors in different regions in eastern Mediterranean where desalination plants take place, in order to form a picture of the situation of the environment. The analysis of methodology followed, through which is explained the whole procedure. For this purpose data from the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research where used, which include physicochemical measurements for two sampling stations in Limassol: the old harbor, Vasiliko and Zygi. Also data of the caught fish for the years 2011 and 2012 were studied. From the above data, diagrams were constructed for each parameter and for each station. After that, there is a discussion in detail of the results in order to understand if the marine ecosystem is affected from the desalination plants. Then, some ultimately ways of brine disposal and treatment are mentioned in order to eliminate the environmental impacts. Finally the overall conclusions drawn from this Master Thesis are included.
