| dc.description | The present research focuses on disgust as both a physiological response of rejection and also as a negative pleasure in aesthetics and philosophy of art. Although disgust is one of the six basic emotions of developmental biology, it was largely ignored by aestheticians and philosophers. Disgust’s role and value in the art world and philosophy was recognised by contemporary theorists, intellectuals, and scientists like the phenomenologist Aurel Kolnai, the psychologist Paul Rozin and the philosophers William Ian Miller, Noel Carroll, Jenefer Robinson, Carolyn Korsmeyer and many others. This essay attempts to define the disgusting and explain disgust’s cause and intentional objects. Disgust is distinguished in two types: physical disgust and moral disgust. Physical disgust refers to the bodily aversion caused by various external stimuli, while moral disgust is a response towards moral offences. Firstly, disgust will be examined as a basic human emotion, while I will try to explain what disgust is, its nature, the reasons for its existence and when it is elicited as an emotion. It is a common place that despite disgust’s aversive character and its role of avoiding close contact so that contamination is escaped, it also tends to attract. The paradox of disgust is related to the allure it causes. Contemporary theorists like Kolnai and Korsmeyer examine the morbid allure and fascination disgust arouses and explore its aesthetic and artistic value. Consequently, these theorists include disgust in the category of negative emotions that cause the so-called “negative pleasure”. The pleasures someone feels at the sight of an aversive object seems paradoxical. In my research I discuss various approaches related to the paradox of aversion and propose possible suggestions for the solution of this puzzle. Through the examination of disgust-related artworks a categorization and taxonomy of disgusting art is attempted. | en_US |
| dc.description.abstract | Η παρούσα έρευνα έχει ως επίκεντρο την αηδία τόσο ως ψυχοφυσιολογική αντίδραση απόκριση απόρριψης όσο και ως αρνητική ηδονή στην αισθητική και τη φιλοσοφία της τέχνης. Η αηδία, παρότι για την εξελικτική βιολογία συγκαταλέγεται μέσα στα βασικά συναισθήματα, υπήρξε μια παραγνωρισμένη συναισθηματική αντίδραση για αρκετά μεγάλο χρονικό διάστημα λόγω της ιδιότητας της να απωθεί. Ο ρόλος της και η αξία της στον καλλιτεχνικό και φιλοσοφικό χώρο ξεκίνησε να αναγνωρίζεται από πιο σύγχρονους στοχαστές, επιστήμονες και θεωρητικούς όπως ο Aurel Kolnai, ο Paul Rozin, ο William Ian Miller, ο Noel Carroll, η Jenefer Robinson, η Carolyn Korsmeyer και πολλούς άλλους. Το δοκίμιο αυτό είναι μια προσπάθεια να ορίσει το αηδιαστικό, να εξηγήσει τι είναι αυτό που δημιουργεί την αίσθηση της αηδίας και γιατί εμείς οι άνθρωποι τείνουμε να αηδιάζουμε. Η αηδία είναι ένα σύνθετο συναίσθημα και διακρίνεται σε δύο τύπους: στην φυσική αηδία και στην ηθική αηδία. Η φυσική αηδία είναι η αηδία που βιώνει κάποιος σωματικά ως αντίδραση σε συγκεκριμένα εξωτερικά ερεθίσματα, ενώ η ηθική αηδία εγείρεται ως αντίδραση σε πράξεις, συμπεριφορές και ποιότητες χαρακτήρων. Αρχικά θα μελετηθεί η αηδία ως βασικό ανθρώπινο συναίσθημα καθώς θα προσπαθήσω να εξηγήσω τι είναι αηδία, ποια η φύση της, οι λόγοι ύπαρξής της και πότε πυροδοτείται. Είναι κοινός τόπος ότι ενώ η αηδία απωθεί και έχει ως σκοπό να παρεμποδίζει την όποια στενή επαφή με κάτι που απειλεί να μολύνει, έχει επίσης την τάση να ελκύει την προσοχή. Σύγχρονοι θεωρητικοί όπως ο Kolnai και η Korsmeyer κ.ά. εντοπίζουν την νοσηρή αυτή γοητεία και την έλξη που ασκεί η αηδία και εκτιμούν την αισθητική αλλά και καλλιτεχνική της αξία. Συνεπώς την εντάσσουν κι αυτήν μέσα στην κατηγορία των συναισθημάτων που προκαλούν κάποιου είδους «αρνητική ηδονή» ή ακόμα και ένα είδος απόλαυσης. Εξαιτίας της φύσης της αηδίας να προκαλεί μια δυσάρεστη συναισθηματική απόκριση, η απόλαυση που νιώθει κανείς στη θέαση ενός αποκρουστικού αντικειμένου αποτελεί μυστήριο. Η γοητεία και η σαγήνη που ασκεί η αηδία αποτελεί ένα από τα παράδοξα των αρνητικών συναισθημάτων. Στην παρούσα έρευνα θα παρουσιάσω διάφορες προσεγγίσεις στοχαστών και φιλοσόφων γύρω από το παράδοξο και θα τις εξετάσω με απώτερο σκοπό πιθανές εισηγήσεις αλλά και σκέψεις που αφορούν στην επίλυση του παράδοξου. Ωστόσο, η μελέτη αυτή δεν αποσκοπεί κατ’ ανάγκην να απαντήσει σε ερωτήματα και φιλοσοφικά προβλήματα που προκύπτουν μέσα από αυτό το αίνιγμα, αλλά εξετάζει το παράδοξο της θετικής αυτής έκβασης μέσα από μια ουσιαστικά αρνητική εμπειρία. Πρόκειται περισσότερο για μια έρευνα που εξετάζει περιπτώσεις σύγχρονης αηδιαστικής τέχνης με σκοπό την κατηγοριοποίηση και ταξινόμησή τους. | en_US |
