| dc.description | This dissertation focuses on the Mediterranean as a paradigm of a new, in interaction with the past, discourse, which deconstructs the north-western hegemonic narrative, and which stands as a potentially equal adversary to it. Characteristic qualities of the Mediterranean, such as, mobility, connectivity and decentering undermine the hegemonic structures. The creative expressions of the Mediterranean, specifically the Ottoman novels of Orhan Pamuk, are examined, in order to establish how characteristics, such as, intersections, mutual influences, hybridity, cosmopolitanism, a fertile interaction with the past, the undermining of dogmatism, and the «corruption» of fixed identities are used to deconstruct the hegemonic narrative of a «delayed» Mediterranean modernity. With reference to Pamuk’s novels, there is an examination of subjects such as, the revival of the Ottoman Islam in juxtaposition to the Turkish secular state, the internalised orientalist approach which seems to lead to a divided Turkish self and the deconstruction of national boundaries, dogmatic perceptions and binary positions. These characteristics are viewed within a Mediterranean context, which juxtaposes the cosmopolitan vision of fluidity, interaction and exchange with the hegemonic narrative. The novels are examined as representative examples of an anti-hegemonic literary modernity, which subverts the dominant secular narrative through a creative interaction with the past, the blurring of fixed identities and cultural hybridity. | en_US |
| dc.description.abstract | Η διατριβή επικεντρώνεται στη Μεσόγειο, ως πρότυπο μιας νέας, σε συνδιαλλαγή με το παρελθόν, θεώρησης, η οποία αποδομεί τo βορειο-δυτικό ηγεμονικό αφήγημα και τη φανερώνει ως το δυνητικά αντίπαλο δέος αυτής της ηγεμονικότητας. Χαρακτηριστικά της Μεσογείου όπως η κινητικότητα, η συνδεσιμότητα και η αποκέντρωση υποσκάπτουν το ηγεμονικό αφήγημα. Διερευνάται η καλλιτεχνική δημιουργία της Μεσογείου, ειδικά όπως αντιπροσωπεύεται στις οθωμανικές νουβέλες του Orhan Pamuk, και εξετάζονται χαρακτηριστικά τα οποία αποδομούν το αφήγημα της «καθυστερημένης» νεωτερικότητας, όπως, οι διασταυρώσεις, η αλληλεπίδραση, η υβριδικότητα η δημιουργική συνδιαλλαγή με το παρελθόν, η υπονόμευση δογματισμών, ο κοσμοπολιτισμός και η «διαφθορά» στεγανών ταυτοτήτων. Αναφορικά στις νουβέλες του Pamuk, πραγματεύονται θέματα όπως, η αναβίωση του οθωμανικού Ισλάμ ως αντιπαράθεση στο αφήγημα του τουρκικού κοσμικού κράτους, η εσωτερικευμένη οριενταλιστική προσέγγιση, η οποία φαίνεται να οδηγεί σε μια διχασμένη τουρκική ταυτότητα και η αποδόμηση εθνικιστικών συνόρων, δογματικών αντιλήψεων και διπολικών τοποθετήσεων εντός του πλαισίου της Μεσογείου, η οποία αντιπαραθέτει το κοσμοπολιτικό όραμα της ρευστότητας, της αλληλεπίδρασης και της συναλλαγής, με το ηγεμονικό αφήγημα. Οι νουβέλες εξετάζονται ως αντιπροσωπευτικά δείγματα μιας αντι-ηγεμονικής λογοτεχνικής νεωτερικότητας, η οποία αποδομεί την κυρίαρχη αφήγηση μέσω της γόνιμης συνδιαλλαγής με το παρελθόν, της διαφθοράς στεγανών ταυτοτήτων και την ανατροπή του κυρίαρχου κοσμικού αφηγήματος από τον πολιτισμικό υβριδισμό. | en_US |
