Στη διατριβή διερευνώνται οι συνθήκες συγκρότησης της ομάδας στη Φλωρεντία στα μέσα του 19ου αιώνα και η κοινή δραστηριότητα των μελών της. Σχολιάζονται οι νεωτερικές, αντιακαδημαϊκές τους αναζητήσεις και η πολιτική τους στράτευση στο περιβάλλον αναβρασμού του Risorgimento και παρουσιάζονται έργα με σχετικό περιεχόμενο. Επισημαίνεται η σημασία των συναντήσεών τους στο Caffè Michelangiolo και εξετάζονται οι καλλιτεχνικές τους αντιλήψεις μέσα από κείμενα που παράγονται στη σύντομη διάρκεια δραστηριότητας της ομάδας (1855-1862) αλλά και στη συνέχεια. Παρουσιάζονται σύντομα βιογραφικά καλλιτεχνών της ομάδας μαζί με έργα τους και σχολιάζεται η θεματολογία τους. Ειδική έμφαση δίνεται στη διαμόρφωση της τεχνοτροπίας των Macchiaioli, στην οποία οφείλουν το (αρχικά υποτιμητικό) όνομά τους. Αναλύεται η τεχνική «macchia» που επινόησαν και στοιχεία της θεωρητικής της τεκμηρίωσης. Στη διατριβή αξιοποιείται υλικό από άρθρα και άλλα τεκμήρια των ζωγράφων της ομάδας για τον προσδιορισμό των καλλιτεχνικών τους επιδιώξεων. Παρουσιάζονται κείμενα με απόψεις των υποστηρικτών τους στην κριτική που ασκείται στο έργο τους και θεωρητικές τοποθετήσεις για την αισθητική θεμελίωση των εικαστικών πειραματισμών της ομάδας, σε μεταγενέστερη φάση. Επιπλέον, εξετάζεται το σύγχρονο ερευνητικό ενδιαφέρον για τους Macchiaioli μέσα από την παρουσίαση μιας σειράς εκθέσεων των τελευταίων χρόνων και τέλος, απορρίπτεται η τοποθέτηση ότι η ομάδα αντιπροσώπευσε έναν πρώιμο ιταλικό ιμπρεσιονισμό, ο οποίος προηγήθηκε του γαλλικού κατά μία δεκαετία. | Description: | This thesis examines the group of Italian painters known as the “Macchiaioli”, within the context of the Risorgimento. I review the conditions under which the group was formed in Florence in the mid-19th century, and the common activities undertaken by its members. I comment on their modernist, anti-academic pursuits and their political engagement within the political turmoil of the Risorgimento, and present works characteristic of that engagement. I stress the importance of their meetings at the Caffè Michelangiolo and examine their ideas on art found in writings produced both during the group’s short lifetime (1855-1862) and later. I present short biographies of the group’s members and discuss representative works. I lay particular stress on the formation of the style, to which they owe their (initially pejorative) name “Macchaioli”. I analyse the technique of the “macchia” that they devised, and discuss some of its theoretical justifications. I make use of writings by members of the group in order to explore their artistic aims. I also discuss writings by supporters of the group, responding to contemporary criticism and later writings providing theoretical arguments in support of the group’s artistic aims and experimentations.
