Abstract
In the current postgraduate dissertation, the study of energy behavior of different
technologies cooling -heating is presented, as well as use of renewable sources of energy
in residential buildings(homes and apartments buildings) in three different climate zones.
Specifically, the buildings which were examined are located in a seaside area (Limassol),
in a central area (Nicosia) and in the mountainous area (Saittas).
For the current surrey, we have as data the consumptions of hourly basis for one year, for
both kinds of buildings in the three areas mentioned above. Our aim is the final
consumption of both buildings to be almost zero, which can be achieved with a high
energy efficiency system or with combination of renewable energy sources.
The different technologies were simulated by operating the data of the manufactures with
the help pf Microsoft excel computer sheets. Then, there was energy analysis,
environmental analysis and financial analysis. Therefore, we managed to compare the
different technologies to each other, to see which is suitable in energy terms, in emission
terms and in financial terms.
From the above research, we come to the conclusion that, in a building in Cyprus, whether
this is single-family building or an a multi-family building, no matter of the area that is
located, the most affordable solution for all is the use of renewable energy sources in
combination with a high energy efficiency heating-cooling system. This is due to the great
sunny weather all year round. The solution for the use of photovoltaic demands more
funding at the beginning but with the form of its net present value within fifteen years, it
is judged as a more suitable solution.
