Abstract
" DFG APPROVES SCIENTIFIC NETWORK ""DIGITAL 3D RECONSTRUCTIONS AS TOOLS IN ARCHITECTURAL RESEARCH"" Over the next 3 years, 14 network members under the leadership of the TU Dresden will address the question of how 3D reconstructions can methodically convey our knowledge of historical architecture methodologically and which conditions are conducive to it in several two-day meetings. In architectural history research, digital 3D reconstructions have been used as knowledge carriers, research tools and means of representation for more than 30 years. On the one hand, the number of digital reconstructions created has increased continuously over the past few years, and on the other, they have extremely different technical, graphic and content-related qualities. This raises the question of criteria and approaches to evaluate and validate the use of models and tools and the resulting results. With this in mind, the use of methods of digital reconstruction in architectural history research has always been somewhat ambivalent. A whole series of extremely justified scientific and methodological reservations contrasts with impressive application examples and research potential. The participants in the network deal with the following topics: Location and systematization as a research tool Scientific and critical understanding of methods Documentation of the reconstruction process and result Presentation and involvement in discourse Standards and guidelines The results of the work flow into jointly developed guidelines and a ""manual for scientific digital 3D reconstruction"" based on them."
