Η παρούσα διατριβή στοχεύει, καταρχήν, να τοποθετήσει τη μοντέρνα κυπριακή αρχιτεκτονική εντός του ευρύτερου πλαισίου της σύγχρονης συζήτησης περί παραλλήλων μοντερνισμών, και δη της Μεσογείου. Βασισμένη σε αυτή τη θεώρηση, επιχειρεί να αναλύσει τα νέα δεδομένα που αμφισβητούν το κυρίαρχο αφήγημα της μοντέρνας αρχιτεκτονικής σχετικά με την εξέλιξη της στο «κέντρο» και την επίδραση ή/και διάχυσή της στην «περιφέρεια». Οι παράλληλοι μοντερνισμοί αφορούν, επιπλέον, στις πρώην αποικίες όπου ο μοντερνισμός εξελίχθηκε σε σχέση με την εισαγωγή της «δυτικής» κουλτούρας και τις διαδικασίες «εκμοντερνισμού» που εφαρμόστηκαν σε αυτές. Έχοντας ως παραμέτρους τη Μεσόγειο και την αποικιοκρατία, συστήνεται ένα καινούργιο πλαίσιο για την ανάλυση της μοντέρνας αρχιτεκτονικής στην Κύπρο, που δίνει μια νέα οπτική και νέα συμπεράσματα. Έτσι, η διατριβή πραγματεύεται την ιδιαιτερότητα του κυπριακού μοντερνισμού που είναι αναπόσπαστα συνδεδεμένη τόσο με τη μεσογειακή κουλτούρα και αρχιτεκτονική, όσο και με τις κοινωνικοπολιτικές και τεχνο-οικονομικές μεταβολές που προέκυψαν στο νησί με τη βρετανική αποικιοκρατία. Οι περιόδοι εξέλιξης της μοντέρνας αρχιτεκτονικής στην Κύπρο αντιμετωπίζονται ως μια έκφανση μοντερνισμού που προέκυψε από τη διαπραγμάτευση μεταξύ των τοπικών ιδιαιτεροτήτων και των ευρύτερων μεταποικιακών και διεθνών νεωτεριστικών στοιχείων, είτε αυτά αφορούν σε κοινωνικά και πολιτισμικά είτε σε κλιματολογικά και κατασκευαστικά χαρακτηριστικά. | Description: | Modernism in Cypriot architecture constitutes one of the many appearances of Modernism, which have emerged in the mediterranean area during the 20th century. This dissertation aims, intitially, at placing modern Cypriot architecture within the broader frame of the contemporary discussion regarding parallel modernisms and, specifically, those of the Mediterreanean. Based on this discourse, the dissertation will attempt to analyse the new data that challenges the dominant narrative of modern architecture that refers to its evolution in the “centre” and its influence and/or permeation to the “periphery.” Parallel modernisms, additionally, associate with the former colonies, where modernism evolved in relation to the introduction of “western culture” and the “modernization” processes that applied there. Having the Mediterranean and colonialism as the main parameters, a new framework for the examination and analysis of modern architecture in Cyprus is recommended, thus, leading to new points of view and new conclusions. Therefore, the dissertation deals with the particularities of Cypriot modernism which is inextricably linked with both the mediterranean culture and architecture and the sociopolitical and techno-economic changes that occurred on the island during the British colonialism.
