Παράλληλα, ως παράγωγο της κυπριακής εμπειρίας της νεωτερικότητας, είναι συνυφασμένη με τις έντονες κοινωνικοπολιτικές και ιστορικές διακυμάνσεις του εικοστού αιώνα στην αποικιακή και μετα-αποικιακή Κύπρο και την ευρύτερη περιοχή της Μεσογείου. Ο αρχιτεκτονικός κυπριακός μοντερνισμός συνιστά μια «αυθεντική» τοπική απάντηση στην προβληματική προσαρμογή του Δυτικού οικουμενικού προτύπου στην «περιφέρεια» και χαρακτηρίζεται από την ιδιαίτερη διαπραγμάτευση του με αμφιλεγόμενες για τον κυρίαρχο μοντερνισμό έννοιες, όπως η «διακόσμηση» και η «παράδοση». Σε αυτό το πλαίσιο, η εισήγηση ενός κυπριακού (αρχιτεκτονικού) μοντερνισμού – με έμφαση στα επίτοιχα ανάγλυφα που προκύπτουν από τις συνεργασίες μεταξύ Κυπρίων αρχιτεκτόνων και καλλιτεχνών – αμφισβητεί το ηγεμονικό Δυτικοευρωπαϊκό πρότυπο νεωτερικότητας και την οικουμενικότητα της μοντερνιστικής αισθητικής σε δύο επίπεδα: τον άκαμπτο χωροχρονικό ορισμό και τον λόγο γύρω από την ιεράρχηση των τεχνών σε «υψηλές» [high] και «ελάσσονες» [low] όπως εκφράζεται στο πρώτο μισό του εικοστού αιώνα, μέσω της σύνδεσης των διακοσμητικών τεχνών με τη θηλυκότητα, και την παράλληλη υποβάθμιση τους. | Description: | Modern architecture in Cyprus represents a case of an alternative modernism in the Mediterranean and thus is framed by contemporary theoretical and academic interest in “other” multiple modernities in the Western “periphery.” In addition, as a product of Cyprus’ experience of modernity, it is interwoven with the intense twentieth-century sociopolitical and historical fluctuations experienced in colonial and post-colonial Cyprus, and in the wider Mediterranean region.
