    <title>Bexley Responder: A Living Newspaper</title>
    <link>https://hdl.handle.net/20.500.14279/36352</link>
    <description>Title: Bexley Responder: A Living Newspaper
Authors: Kargotis, Demetrios; Mortimer, Nicholas; Macdonald, Dash; Korda, Roxanne; Blanco, Daniel; Konat, Aparna
Abstract: Bexley Responder: A Living Newspaper is a participatory, site-specific performance project developed by Post Workers Theatre in collaboration with Three Rivers. The project reactivates the historical form of the ‘Living Newspaper’, a mode of workers’ theatre emerging in the early twentieth century, to examine contemporary social issues through collective authorship and performance.&#xD;
&#xD;
Developed over a three-month period, the work engaged local residents in Bexley through story-gathering, co-writing workshops, and public interventions. Drawing on methods of practice-based research and co-creation, participants contributed to the development of episodic theatrical scenes based on locally relevant issues.&#xD;
&#xD;
The project explores how accessible forms of political theatre can be adapted to contemporary contexts, foregrounding community voice and shared authorship, while positioning performance as a tool for civic dialogue and engagement in public space.
Description: The project unfolded as a multi-phase public programme combining story gathering, co-writing workshops, and performance development across Bexley. Local residents were invited to contribute stories via open calls, a telephone hotline, and in-person engagement at community events, including Thamesmead Festival and activities at Bexley Broadway Shopping Centre.&#xD;
&#xD;
Post Workers Theatre collaborated with Infinite Opera and a group of local writers to shape collected material into a series of short theatrical scenes, drawing on the episodic structure of historical Living Newspapers. Additional workshops led by theatre maker James Frost supported participants in costume design, prop making, and scenography.&#xD;
&#xD;
The project culminated in a mobile street performance at Bexley Broadway Shopping Centre, bringing together diverse voices and perspectives into a collectively authored work that addressed local concerns and experiences.</description>
