Abstract: This paper presents the application of reliability based optimised inspection planning (OIP) techniques on a number of Amoco (UK) Exploration Company's platforms both new and existing. The OIP methodology is discussed together with specific examples from the Amoco studies. The benefits achieved from the application of these techniques are highlighted demonstrating the potential of these techniques to achieve more consistent levels of safety and maximise the efficiency of inspections. New structures benefit most from the early use of these tools while older structures with long inspection histories can also benefit significantly by the critical assessment of past inspection performance and rationalisation of future inspections which the OIP techniques offer.
