| dc.description | The present study aims to present a literature review of the diversity of recorded amphibians and reptiles in Cyprus. More analytically, at the first chapter, this study after referring to place-time and the biogeographical location of Cyprus, gathers general data about the reptile fauna. Furthermore, it highlights the morphological identification of the leaving local species, throughout standard keys that are applied today for the reptile fauna and describes the molecular identification, with the method of genetic material barcoding (DNA barcoding). Then, the present research, describes morphologically all the recorded reptiles and amphibians that exist so far on the Cyprus island. In addition, it emphasizes to the need of this research, but also refers the explorational questions that are asked in order to implement some of them in the future. After, at the second chapter, it describes the methodology that was followed through research design and method. Specifically, in chapter three, via the literature review and discussion it manifests the most effective methods of species identification around the world, comparing the methods that are used at different continents and in Cyprus, and cites the innovative method of meta-barcoding DNA. This specific research mostly focuses on bibliographic review of the reptile fauna in Cyprus, and the literature related for barcoding the genetic code, with the ultimate goal of laying the foundations of a future complete library / database of genetic sequences (DNA barcode reference library). This tool targets the collective archiving of species for this group and is expected to facilitate the scouting and calculation of species in various geographical locations of the island, for a more effective protection and management of them. Finally, at chapter four, the study critically discusses and interprets the results obtained from the literature review and presents, at chapter five, relevant conclusions based on the limitations that existed. | en_US |
| dc.description.abstract | Η παρούσα μελέτη σκοπό έχει να παρουσιάσει βιβλιογραφική ανασκόπηση, της ποικιλότητας των καταγεγραμμένων αμφίβιων και ερπετών της Κύπρου. Πιο αναλυτικά, στο κεφάλαιο 1, η μελέτη αυτή αφού αναφερθεί χωροχρονικά και βιογεωγραφικά στην τοποθεσία της Κύπρου, συγκεντρώνει γενικά στοιχεία για τα ερπετά και τα αμφίβιά της. Στην συνέχεια, δίνει βάση στην μορφολογική ταυτοποίηση των ειδών του νησιού, μέσω των κλείδων προσδιορισμού που υπάρχουν σήμερα για την ερπετοπανίδα και περιγράφει την μέθοδο της μοριακής αναγνώρισης μέσω της κωδικοποίησης του γενετικού υλικού. Ακολούθως, περιγράφει μορφολογικά όλα τα καταγεγραμμένα ερπετά και αμφίβια που υπάρχουν μέχρι τώρα στο νησί της Κύπρου. Έπειτα, παρουσιάζει την αναγκαιότητα της παρούσας μελέτης αλλά και τα ερευνητικά ερωτήματα που τίθενται ούτως ώστε να υλοποιηθούν κάποια από αυτά στο μέλλον. Μετέπειτα, στο κεφάλαιο 2, περιγράφεται η μεθοδολογία μέσω του σχεδιασμού έρευνας και της ερευνητικής μεθόδου που ακολουθήθηκε. Συγκεκριμένα, στο κεφάλαιο 3 μέσω της βιβλιογραφικής ανασκόπησης και συζήτησης αναδεικνύει τις αποτελεσματικότερες μεθόδους ταυτοποίησης των ειδών ανά τω παγκόσμιω, συγκρίνοντας μεθόδους που χρησιμοποιούνται σε διάφορες ηπείρους αλλά και στην Κύπρο αναφέροντας και την καινοτόμο μέθοδο του meta-Barcoding DNA. Η μελέτη στοχεύει ειδικότερα στην βιβλιογραφική ανασκόπηση της ερπετοπανίδας της Κύπρου, και της βιβλιογραφίας σχετικής με τη κωδικοποίηση του γενετικού κώδικα, με απώτερο σκοπό να θέσει τις βάσεις, ούτως ώστε να δημιουργηθεί μελλοντικά μια ολοκληρωμένη βιβλιοθήκη/βάση δεδομένων γενετικών αλληλουχιών (DNA barcode reference library). Το εργαλείο αυτό αποσκοπεί στη συγκεντρωτική για την εν λόγω ομάδα αρχειοθέτηση ειδών, αναμένεται να διευκολύνει την αναζήτηση και καταμέτρηση ειδών σε διάφορα γεωγραφικά σημεία του νησιού, για αποτελεσματικότερη προστασία και διαχείριση των ειδών. Τέλος, στο κεφάλαιο 4 η μελέτη συζητεί και ερμηνεύει μέσα από μια κριτική σκοπιά τα αποτελέσματα που προκύπτουν από τη βιβλιογραφική ανασκόπηση, και εν τέλει στο κεφάλαιο 5 καταλήγει στα συμπεράσματα με βάση και τους περιορισμούς που υπήρξαν. | en_US |
