      <description>Title: Digitization, restoration and visualization of terracotta figurines from the 'House of Orpheus', Nea Paphos, Cyprus&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Authors: Loizides, Fernando; Lanitis, Andreas; Papantoniou, G.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Abstract: The terracotta figurines from the so-called ‘House of Orpheus’ in Nea Paphos,Cyprus, and in particular the terracotta figurines excavated between 1982-1992, form part of a significant material assemblage that spans in time from Hellenistic to Roman times. These high quality terracotta figurines fall within the mainstream of Cypriot art and its associated ancient technological and cultural systems. The research project presented here, aims at a systematic assessment of this assemblage employing stylistic, analytical, computational and theoretical methods of study. Emphasis is given to the digitization process that involves 3D scanning of items of interest; and the subsequent processing that aims to reconstruct and visualize specific fragmented specimens in their anticipated full shape and colour. Also presented are our plans for developing interactive applications that utilize 3D models of the specimens.</description>

      <title>An automated methodology for assessing the damage on Byzantine icons</title>

      <description>Title: An automated methodology for assessing the damage on Byzantine icons&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Authors: Maronidis, Anastasios G.; Lanitis, Andreas&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Abstract: Byzantine art is overwhelmed by a multitude of icons that portray sacred faces. However, a large number of icons of historical value are either partially or totally damaged and thus in need of undergoing conservation. The detection and assessment of damage in cultural heritage artifacts comprise an integral part of the conservation process. In this paper, a method that can be used for assessing the damage on faces appearing in Byzantine icons is presented. The main approach involves the estimation of the residuals obtained after the coding and reconstruction of face image regions using trained Principal Component Analysis texture models. The extracted residuals can be used as the basis for obtaining information about the amount of damage and the positions of the damaged regions. Due to the specific nature of Byzantine icons several variations of the basic approach are tested through a quantitative experimental evaluation so that the methods most suited to the specific application domain are identified. As part of the experimental evaluation, holistic as well as patch-decomposition techniques have been utilized in order to catch the global and local information of the images, respectively. According to the results it is possible to detect and localize with reasonable accuracy the damaged areas of faces appearing in Byzantine icons</description>

      <title>Applying adaptive qos-aware medium access control in priority-based vehicular ad hoc networks</title>

      <description>Title: Applying adaptive qos-aware medium access control in priority-based vehicular ad hoc networks&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Authors: Lambrinos, Lambros; Tziouvas, Constantinos; Chrysostomou, Chrysostomos&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Abstract: his paper proposes a novel, adaptive medium access control mechanism for vehicular ad hoc networks. A simple, effective, and efficient nonlinear control law is built, based on fuzzy logic control principles, which can be easily adopted in different network environments (e.g. vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication). We demonstrate, via simulative evaluation, that the proposed fuzzy control methodology offers inherent robustness with effective control of the system under dense and dynamic conditions, without the need to (re)tune any parameters. The proposed approach offers distinct differentiation among differently prioritized traffic types, thus providing adequate Quality of Service (QoS) in terms of throughput performance, in contrast with the IEEE 802.11p MAC protocol we compared against.</description>
